Frequently Asked Questions

1. When was the NYCGBL formed?
The league was formed in the fall of 2006. The Women's+ Division was formed in the fall of 2008.

2. Why was the league formed?

In 2006, a group of sports enthusiasts noticed that New York City had a number of athletic teams for those in the LGBTQIA+ community but no structured basketball league. So they took it upon themselves to create New York's first official LGBTQIA+ basketball league. A small group of women expressed interest and formed the Women's+ Division in September of 2008.

3. Do you have to be LGBTQIA+ to play in the league?

No. The league fosters an athletic environment free of discrimination for members and friends of the LGBTQIA+ community, which includes our straight allies. It also promotes positive values in our community and fights to eliminate negative stereotypes associated with LGBTQIA+ athletics.

4. I identify as transgender, gender non-conforming or some variation; which league should I register for?

PBLNYC fosters a safe and welcoming environment to play basketball and build community. All gender identities are recognized so we encourage you to register for whichever league you feel most comfortable competing in. We do not question which league players register for based on gender identity.

5. If my gender pronouns and/or identity is not being respected, what should I do?

If your gender identity is not being respected, we encourage you to address it with whomever you feel most comfortable: the individual(s) directly, your team captain and/or the NYCGBL board. Per the league's Code of Conduct policy, the NYCGBL does not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Captains and board members are aware of the code of conduct and have been charged with upholding the league's mission.

6. Where are games held?

We play at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, which is located on 899 Tenth Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets in Manhattan. You must show a valid ID card to gain access to the gym.

7. How many levels are there?

We have three divisions which accommodate any level of playing ability.

A-Division: majority of players played in college and/or extremely competitively in high school; most competitive division

B-Division: majority of players played in high school and/or lower collegiate levels; fairly competitive division

C-Division: novice players who are working on further developing their playing skills; low level of competition

8. What days and times are games held?

Games are held on Sunday afternoons.

9. I don't know that much about the game, can I still participate?

Absolutely. Beginners are always welcome, as are players of all experiences. Our C-Division is perfect if you have little to no experience.

10. Are there practice sessions?

Unfortunately, there aren't practice sessions scheduled.

11. Is there open play?

From time to time. Please join our mailing list to be notified.

12. How much does it cost to participate?

Each season is different based on the number of players and sponsors. The registration fee is $170. The league also recognizes there are circumstances where individuals do not have the financial means to play so it offers a Player Assistance Program. Please email women@pridebasketballnyc.org for more information.

13. How are the teams picked?

We ask players to describe their skill level and basketball experience on each season's registration form. All new players are required to attend a Player Evaluation day, held a few weeks before the start of the season. There, league captains get a sense for skill levels to make sure players are playing in the right divisions. Players are then chosen through a draft system by the league captains before the season begins.

14. Can my friend and I be on the same team?

The teams in our league are determined by a draft system, so being paired with a friend is not guaranteed. Our league is centered around building an inclusive place to play basketball and camaraderie, so we encourage all players (new and returning) to get to know their new teammates.

15. Are there playoffs?

Yes! At the conclusion of each season the teams battle it out in playoffs to win their division championship.

16. Are there awards?

Yes! At the end of each season, each division votes on an MVP, Rookie of the Year, Best Defense and Sportsmanship awards. The C-Division also has a Most Improved award. These are given out at the End-of-Season Party at the same time as Division Champions are awarded.

17. Is there year-round play?

No. The league is in session for two seasons; Fall and Spring. Fall season starts in September. Spring season starts in March.

18. Are there social events?

Yes. We always have a season kickoff and season ending party. There will also be various happy hours and social activities throughout the season, which you will be notified about from your team captain and board member emails.

19. Do you have age requirements?

Yes. Per our required insurance policy, only players ages 18 and over are allowed to participate in the league.

20. How does one become a sponsor of a team?

The League is sponsored by a number of businesses around New York City, and we are always looking for more opportunities to connect with the community. To inquire about sponsorship and its benefits, send an email to women@pridebasketballnyc.org.
